Christmas in New Zealand

We celebrate Christmas in New Zealand. There are a variety of religions ( not just catholic- Presbyterian, Anglican, Baptists, Mormons Bretherens etc) but most people celebrate Christmas. We have similar traditions but these are some of the things that my family did when I was growing up and still do today. We share presents on Christmas morning. We usually have Christmas dinner at around midday and eat things like turkey, chicken, ham and lamb with roast potatoes, pumpkin kumara and other vegetables like peas, carrots and beans, also salad sometimes. Pudding is usually fruit salad, steam pudding, cream and ice cream. It is a real feast and we usually eat too much. Adults drink wine and children drink sparkling grape juice or fizzy drink. Shops are closed on Christmas day (this is one of the only days everything is closed these days) The day after Christmas day is called "Boxing Day." All the shops have big sales on this day.
Some people go to church at Christmas, but not everyone.
Christmas is a time for giving and to share with your family. Families often come together at this time of year. Because it is summer lots of people got to the beach, lakes and parks etc. There are always games of cricket and touch rugby and barbecues.
I hope you have had a great start to your new Year and we'll be back at the end of January.
Ciao for now.
Mr Hornby

Hi Kauri's class!
We're fine.
The sun is shining but it's very cold. Remember it's winter now.
In a week we're going on Christmas Holiday and we're very very happy for this.
We're staying on holiday for two weeks but we're going to have a lot of homework to do.
In Italy on 8th December we're making decorations, the Christmas Tree and the Crib.
Cities are lighted and decorated and people seem very happy but it's not snowing now and it's good when it's snowing at Christmas.
On Christmas day we have lunch with our family and relatives and we eat a lot of good food like Lasagne (here is a recipe) , Roast Beef , Vegetables and the tipical italian cake for Christmas Pandoro and Panettone.
We must go now. Lessons are finishing. Bye for now.
3F.

Cristian

Hi Kauris class!
I'm Cristian and I'm 14. In Turin there are a lot of Mc Donalds' , Burger Kings and restaurants .If you want to eat Italian food you can go to Eataly .
Near my school there's a Mc Donalds' but it isn't very good. I never eat there, I prefer eating at restaurants. I like Burger Kings because they're faster and cleaner. Last year I went to eat pizza with my class. Do you eat pizza in your country? Do you like it?
Do you go out to eat with your class.
Bye Cristian.

Hi
Last Friday some year sixes went to the Masterton Intermediate for an orientation day. This gave them a chance to meet their teacher for next year and try some of the different activities offered.
On Thursday year fives headed of to camp at Mount Holdsworth for a night.
We had to walk over a swing bridge and we went through the river. It was a really long walk and a really big drop if we fell off the track.
We stayed in tents and went for a night walk. One of the people had a laser and was shining it.
In the morning we got woken up by a rooster at 4:00am!! We don't know what a rooster was doing there.
We took lots of photos and here are a few of them.
We have had a very warm November and the last 2 days have been 29 and 30 c, today was cooler at 21 c. We saw on the news that it has already been very cold in parts of Europe.
Ciao for now

Hi,
we are very sorry for what happened to the miners, we heard the news on TV and we read it on newspapers. We thought about you.
Thank you for the sites, we couldn't see them all this morning because we didn't have enough time. We only have three English lessons a week and a lot of things to do. we're studying for exams we'll have in June. It's a difficult year for us. We'll see them soon, it's fantastic to learn something about your country.
Yesterday it snowed a bit in Turin; today the sun is shining, but it's freezing.
We're looking forward Christmas holiday.

Hi! In Greymouth (in the South Island of New Zealand ) 31 miners were mining for coal, and 2 explosions came while they were down there. Two managed to escape, but the rest didn't survive. The first explosion trapped them, and the second one they couldn't survive. It was heating up in there while they were trapped. It is a national tragedy. In writing on Thursday we wrote letters to the families that were related to the miners, but we haven't sent them yet.

Callum

Hi,
Today the temperature in Masterton is 27 degrees (highest)
you can check out the daily forecast for Masterton here.

Most of you live in Torino so you probably have no idea what it's like living in a rural town such as Masterton.
Some of the people in our class live directly in the country and wake up to the sound of native birds such as Tui and Fantail every morning.
I live in town but when we go into the country it is truly majestic.

In the country around Masterton are Mount Holdsworth and Mount Bruce National Parks. Mount Bruce is more commercial, with lots of conservation projects, and Mount Holdsworth is a rough Mountain with a campsite that is maintained by DOC. ter

In town we have a few shops including the Warehouse, a kiwi icon department store. Other big retailers in Masterton are Briscoes, Toyworld, and Farmers.
We are continuously getting new stores so next post could be huge if I list them all.

ANother big enterprise in New Zealand is McDonalds Family Resteraunts, which we have one of in Masterton. Other big takeaway stores are KFC, Subway, and Pizza Hut.

Do you have native animals in Italy?
Do you have McDonalds?
If so what do they serve?

Callum

Hey guys!Wow,you have done heaps of replies to our blogs!Today is a bit colder than usual, but that feels much better because our days before were too hot.We have heaps of things going on like a while ago Kanuka and Rimu moved into the hall because builders have come to make their classes more spacious. So we can't go into the library because it is full of stuff! The builders won't be working on the computer suit for a while, though.Wow,we are all fine.Is it snowing over in Torino? In Masterton we never have snow, but we do in other parts of the country like Christchurch. Our sunny weather is early coming because it is spring, but in December it will be summer,so it is pretty close because today is the 19Th of November. We had an small test a couple of days back-it was a vocabulary test I think. We don't really put books in our bags-except for sometimes our homework book, and we always bring it on Friday's.We haven't got a computer lab,but we have a computer suite. The programmes we use on them are Internet, free mind, office word,Microsoft office PowerPoint, and a few other programmes. We have got some fun activities to do like sometimes in the afternoon our teacher will take us outside for a game on the big field.
I think
I've written enough for one day,Sincerely Annaliese

Introducing Holidays!

Hey Guys!
No we don't drink tea (the teachers drink tea and coffee )
We have heaps of holidays, and here are the main holidays in New-Zealand: Easter, Christmas, and New years day. February 6th Waitangi Day - celebrates the signing of the treaty between The British and the Maori (1840)
Other things we celebrate are: Guy Fawkes day- November 5th, Labour weekend, Queens birthday and Valentines day.(Birthdays). Our school year is divided into  terms, Easter is always part of the first holiday, those holidays are 2 weeks and the Christmas holiday is 6 weeks, (our summer)
Our weekends at school are Saturday and Sunday, and our holidays at the end of each term are 2 weeks, except for Christmas holidays which are 6 weeks!. On Guy Fawkes day we have fireworks, which is always fun! Valentines day is a day to give the people you like/love a card to say I love you. Labour weekend is a 3 day weekend. I think you know what all the other holidays are about. We haven't got a cafeteria like you, we provide our own food in lunch boxes. On Fridays we have a choice to order a lunch order, which gives you fruit, a drink box and a main course which costs $5.00 dollars.
We have also had Halloween in the past few years but it is only celebrated by some people. Have your clocks changed? 23c here tomorrow.
Maori : kai is food  (rhymes with sky)
tamariki is children.
Can you send us a picture please. Do you wear a school uniform?
We'll tell you more about rippa rugby later.

Do you drink tea in the Morning tea time? We eat some snack bars and drink orange juice or water.
What is Rippa Rugby? We don't have it in Italy.
We forgot to tell you we don't go to school on Saturday and you?
Food isn't very good and it's provided by school. We eat pasta, meat, fish, ham with vegetables and fruit. Italian people are known for food, we always eat pasta with different sauces and pizza.
We have a playground in our school and we go there during the lunch break to play.
What about festivities? Which are your traditional ones? In Italy the main festivities are Christmas, New Year and Easter. Nowadays we celebrate Halloween too and you? What do you do on that day? Do you dress up?
When do you have holiday tome in your country? We finish school in june and we get back on 15th September. Then we have two weeks for Christmas and one at Easter.

Hi I'm Jasmine. Our time at school is from 8:55 am to 15:00 pm. We go home the same time everyday. We also have two breaks. One is Morning tea time, the other is Lunch time. We have Morning tea time at 11:10am and lunch at 1:00pm.
We don't go to museums , but we do go on trips. Mostly to go to a Music Show or a Production. We sometimes go to Movies, this year we did.
We don't have French class, Art class, Science class or any of those other classes. We did go to a Science roadshow though. We stay with one teacher for the whole day and do writing, reading, spelling, maths, art, music, physical education and Topic. Topic covers science, social studies, Technology etc. We sometimes do things with the whole school. The weather here is alright. It's like normal weather. Sometimes it's sunny, sometimes it's raining and overcast. It doesn't snow in Masterton. It's only snowed like weak snow. We've never had real white snow before. Other places in New Zealand have snow sometimes in winter.
Our School is not too big. It has a plantation. A plantation is a bushy place with a grassy ground and behind it, lots of tall pine trees. They're good for playing in. There are two fields. One is only fairly big. It's good for playing Rippa Rugby on. There is another field called the Big field. It is huge compared to the other field. This field is good for playing Soccer or Rugby on. There is a goal post, so that's good for rugby.
New Zealand has 2 official languages English and Maori. Haere Mia is welcome and Kia-ora is Hello (in Maori).

Bye for now
Jasmine

Hello! I'm Annaliese and I'm 10 years old and I'm Larissa and I'm 9.We are really happy that you have decided to blog with us,and so is the rest of the class. Our school has got around 200 students and is really fun and friendly. We have exactly 9 classrooms and some great teachers. Our class is called Kauri and we have 23 classmates. We live in a small town called Masterton and it has around 20,000 people. We have just recently finished our school production called the river. we are in the middle of spring and the month is October, and can't wait for Christmas. Unlike you,Christmas is in summer. Our class is into gardening and our teacher Mr Hornby is great at computer work. The temperature today is 15.Everyone in New Zealand was very happy when we drew with Italy in the Fifa world cup.
I would like to know if I can learn a bit of your language?(Annaliese sent this question)
I would like to know how many children are at your school? {Larissa sent this question}
Can you tell us a bit about your school?
From Annaliese and Larissa

Welcome

Welcome to our new Italian friends. We will start by telling you a little about our school, students and community and ask questions to find out about your school and area.
